Stargazing in Las Cruces & around New Mexico

It’s that time of year! An autumn chill has crept into the air over the past week and everyone seems to be getting ready for Las Cruces’s mild winter season. Las Cruces offers many opportunities to enjoy the crisp, fresh outdoor air. Among my favorites, and one for which New Mexico is known for, is the breathtaking starry night sky that adorns our city during these cool, clear nights. Astronomers from all over the world visit our State to enjoy the spectacular display of stars and celestial objects. Observatories for both visual and radio viewing are found all over New Mexico, and some are available to the public! Even a small telescope will reveal many of the beautiful features of our night sky.

The ‘Stars-N-Parks’astronomy program is held in conjunction with New Mexico State Parks. Programs are held at Leasburg Dam, Caballo Lake, Elephant Butte, Oliver Lee Memorial, Rockhound, Pancho Villa and City of Rocks state parks. The programs begin with a laser-pointer led night sky tour conducted by a presenter and followed with views of planets and deep sky objects through a telescope. These state parks are great places to visit around the Las Cruces area! Skywatch schedules and highlights of each park with its activities and programs are available by contacting the specific park you wish to visit. I have inserted links for each one below. You might also want to visit the NM Tourism site to find out about more great activities and day/weekend trip ideas! Looking to sell your home? Things may be cooling off, but that doesn’t mean you can’t sell a home in the fall and winter months. In fact, prospects who are shopping this time of year tend to be more serious than a lot of the “tire kickers” in the spring and summer.
