Las Cruces Event – NMSU vs. UTEP

Whether you’re a football fan or not, there’s something fun and exciting about old rivalries coming together to face off. Harvard vs. Yale, Texas vs. Texas A&M, Ohio State vs. Michigan… The list goes on of famous college battles that result in big new stories and historical followings. I don’t follow sports much, except for an occasional golf tournament, but here in Las Cruces, there’s one game everyone knows about.

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and New Mexico State University (Aggies) game is referred to as the “Battle of 1-10,” named after the short stretch of Interstate that divides the schools; UTEP and NMSU are only 45 minutes apart. For years and years, Aggie fans and Miner fans have come together in the fall for a lot of screaming, cheering, and taunting of the other teams. The schools trade off hosting it each year, and I usually go the years that the game is in Las Cruces. Thousands of spectators, most of which aren’t even in college (like myself), flock to the stadium to take part in the yearly event.

While everyone essentially agrees that this game is a great bonding experience for both cities, there are a few downsides to so many people being at the same place. Firstly, parking and commuting in the area can be difficult; getting to the Aggie Stadium a couple of hours early is the only way to ensure a parking spot. If you don’t plan to attend the game, try to avoid University and 1-10 in the area; the traffic can cause a circus.

The NMSU parking and police are also out in full force on game day. Make sure it’s legal to park where your parking, otherwise you will be ticketed. The police do their best to make sure everyone is safe and the game goes off without a hitch, but it’s wise to remove all valuables from your vehicle since the parking areas are not monitored by cameras.

It’s also very important for people driving in the area to be aware of pedestrians; many game-goers walk from their homes and most college students walk from their dorms or apartments. Even once the game is over and the sun sets, there are still plenty of people out on the streets to enjoy post-game and post-tailgating festivities.

This weekend will be a busy one for Las Cruces. While you’re out having fun, please remember to be safe. If you’re in the Las Cruces area, make sure to come out and support your college’s football team!

The “Battle at 1-10″ is Saturday, September 19th at 6:00pm at Aggie Memorial Stadium. Tickets are on sale at the PanAm Ticket office or click here to get them from Ticketmaster.com.
