The Wilsons were out and about again this weekend! A great fare of free holiday activities was offered up to the people of Las Cruces! All you needed was a desire to be festive and good warm clothing to brave the unseasonably cold weather! YES!! It was cold in the desert!! Old man winter served up SNOW, not once, but TWICE in the same week and followed it up with some low numbers for our nighttime temperatures. It made for a wonderful and drastic change from the norm. We all got to dust off our long johns and dig out our gloves and woolen caps for the occasions.

Friday night was the 2nd annual Winterfest. This was sponsored by the City of Las Cruces and put together by some very dedicated and tireless volunteers from throughout the community. I would like to send out a special word of thanks to Emily Coss and her crew for all the work they did to make this a wonderful event! There were thousands of luminarias to be seen twinkling in the night. I love this unique and special decoration!! It is amazing what a culture can do to dress up a home for the holidays. If you have never seen them, then your first time will be truly amazing!! We had the rare opportunity to see them with a backdrop of a light dusting of snow which made them all the more beautiful!

We started our evening at the wonderful old adobe Women’s Center adjacent to the Women’s Pioneer Park in the Historic Alameda District. The kids were able to sit with Santa and partake in the custom of skilled negotiations and subdued begging. Each child finished with the thought that perhaps any possible indiscretions of behavior were not too egregious as to put them on the “naughty list”. With a gentle Ho..Ho..Ho.. and an obligatory dose of pure cane sugar in the form of a Sheppard’s staff each child walked away with the satisfaction that they covered their bases and would surely get SOMETHING they asked for! Meanwhile when the parents were not shooting away with their digital memory makers they were able to admire the many different gingerbread creations on display. Just one question…..Does anyone REALLY eat them after weeks of sitting out? They were not that good fresh!

We then boarded the horse drawn trolley and were taken, with Goldie’s and Little Bit’s (please see the pictures of these wonderful draft horses that have pulled our people for years) bells ringing, down the road to the recently restored Downtown District. The Christmas lights were twinkling and the vendors were hawking their holiday wares. Lots of handmade crafts were available to put under your tree for the ones you love. Hot chocolate and live music made for a festive atmosphere as hundreds, no maybe thousands of people milled about offering holiday wishes to all. It was a great time to run into old friends and meet new ones as we huddled together to stay warm and enjoy the festivities.

Back to the trolley and off to the Railroad Museum to partake in some special Christmas craft activities for the kiddos. When I said there was something for everyone, I meant it! The only person left out was ol’ Ebaneezer. There was no place for a scrooge on this festive night! We then headed our own sleigh towards home and put some very tired little girls to bed. No doubt, with visions of sugar plums (whatever those are) dancing in their heads.

Next year I encourage everyone to get out and enjoy these activities. Lets all play a part in taking Christmas back from the corporations and turn it again into a season focused on loving, living and goodwill to your fellow man. I hope to see you there next year!
