Giving Back to the Community

The New Year is fast approaching and we’re all beginning to take down our icicle lights and red velvet bows as we make room for all of the goodies we received this holiday season. The ‘season to give’ may be coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean we should all stop giving.
How many times have you (or your family) received heaps of clothing, electronics, and doo-dads for Christmas and had no idea what to do with the stuff it replaced? So often I hear someone say, ‘Oh, we just threw the old stuff out,’ when it was probably in pretty good condition. For the last few years, myself and my family have made a dedicated effort to share all of our gifts with those who are less fortunate.
I know that a lot of people’s New Years resolutions often include cleaning out the clutter. Rather than tossing what you think are old blankets, boxes of junk, and pointless knick knacks, I’d like to suggest taking an afternoon with the family to organize old belongings into ‘give away’ and ‘throw away’ piles. You’ll be amazed at how much stuff will be of use to someone. As they say, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure.”
Another practice in the spirit of giving is giving back to Mother Earth; why not incorporate going green into your New Year resolution? Starting small is easy; next time you’re at the grocery store, pick up a few reusable grocery bags (most are just $1). We keep them right by the door, and a few in the trunk of our cars, so that we remember to use them each time we’re out. Setting up a recycling bin is as easy as finding an old box. One trip once a month to your city’s recycling plant can reduce your carbon footprint enormously.
It’s easy to find your town’s Goodwill and Gospel Missions. If your particular area’s doesn’t have a website, Goodwill Industries website can help you find a location near your home. There is also a very helpful Homeless Shelter Directory for nearly every shelter in the United States dedicated to helping the less fortunate; this might be a good place to start when it comes to passing on your once forgotten belongings.
Las Cruces has a Gospel Mission website to help you find their location and hear their mission statement.
