Hi everyone!

Over the next few weeks I'm going to be talking about the yummy sandwiches we find in town. It's hard to point to my favorite without giving at least 3 others the credit they deserve. So today, I'll start with number 3 on my list:

Dion's Turkey & Swiss

Most people think about pizza when we mention Dion's, but they have excellent salads and sandwiches too. In fact, half the time I go there I'm ordering the Turkey & Swiss.

This scrumptious treat is a toasted sandwich with all the good stuff on it, including a pickle spear and a side of chips. Its toasted so the outside is just crisp enough and the inside is still pillow soft. The other unique feature in all of Dion's sandwiches is the tangy Greek Dressing they come with. This is an excellent addition! (For those of you what are regulars, consider swapping the Greek for Ranch every once in a while)

Dion's opened in Albuquerque, NM in 1978 and opened its Las Cruces location a few years ago. If you're not looking for a sandwich, try the pizza. It's one of the best in town too. And if you're on a diet, try the salads. I love the ranch salad. It comes with pastrami and provolone cheese (I know, not exacxtly diet material, but really good!). One last thing worth noting about Dion's is the Ranch Dressing. We buy it by the bottle! It is really good.

Now it's your turn. What do you think about Dion's?

Hi everyone!

Romance is in the air next week! What is your favorite spot for a romantic Valentine's Day dinner? I think a lot of you might say a home cooked, candle lite dinner, but the rest of us want something fancy!

My choice is Double Eagle!

It's reportedly haunted by the ghosts of two starcrossed lovers who died tragically but still found a way to hang out in a romantic setting. There are cozy nooks, a lush garden room, an elegant dining area with a gold-plated ceiling, a comfy Victorian bar and even a room spiced with furnishings that once graced the Silver City bordello of the notorious Madam Millie.

Whatever your idea of romance, you're likely to find some aspect of it in the rambling, historic and elegant old adobe that houses the Double Eagle on the Mesilla Plaza.

Take your Valentine for luscious margaritas, hors d'oeuvres (try the green chile wontons for a love-enhancing endorphin rush), lunch or a snack. Get big Valentine's points by springing for the Sunday buffet, a gourmet supper or see if you can get reservations for the special annual St. Valentine's Day Wine Tasting Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

They match wines with foods and prepare a wonderful event.

See everyone next week!

Dick's Cafe

And now we finally get to talk about our number 1 favorite hamburger in Las Cruces at Dick's Cafe.

This is the ultimate hamburger and New Mexican food dive!

It's been around since 1959 and they're still going strong. Their homemade hot salsa ranks up there as one of the best ever and their Jumbo Green Chili Cheeseburgers and Fries will fill you to the rim.

Their burger patties are freshly ground with their own recipe and the green chili is out of this world. Nothing touches their flavor or their size.

We frequently eat there when we have visitors looking for authentic green chile cheeseburgers, but be warned, this is a hole in the wall cafe. You won't find anything fancy about this place (or the other places on our list). But if you're hungry for some good green chile, this is one of the best spots throughout southern New Mexico.

If you're looking for something different on the menu, try their Huevos Rancheros! Dick's Cafe has great Mexican food to compliment their menu.

Day's Hamburgers

When I crave a greasy and just down right tasty burger, this is what I crave. They are phenomenal hamburgers, although, it's not the tidiest or most comfortable place to dine.

Their green chile cheeseburgers are good enough to rank them among the top of our list, but their history pushes them up to number two.

Day's Hamburges may be the first restaurant in Las Cruces, NM to serve green chile cheese burgers. At least, they are commonly referenced with other spots in the state who claim that title.

Whether or not they were the first, they were one of the first for sure and considering the fact that the green chile cheese burger has become a staple of just about any New Mexico menue... they have earned the number 2 spot on our list.

When you go, you order at the counter and they call your name and number when its ready. If you're looking to add a side, let me recommend onion rings.

Again, keep in mind that this is good old fasion greasy food so if you're on a diet, don't go. There's nothing on this menu that leads you to losing weight.

And this leads us to numero uno.... can you guess what it is? Tune in next week to find out.

Burger Nook

Last week we talked about the unique hamburger you get at Guacamole's. If you've never been there, plan an evening with some friends on their patio. You'll have fun and enjoy a good burger.

However, the best burger in town belongs to a different kitchen.

This week we'll talk about the 3rd best: Burger Nook.

Located on Madrid, the Burger Nook is a little spot that is tucked away in a small shopping center. But make no mistake, it offers some of the very best burgers in Las Cruces.

Did we mention the price? It's super cheap too, but still super good.

Their green chile cheeseburger (their "Great Burger") earns it a 3rd place on our list.

The menu contains little other than burgers and a few burritos. But burgers, of course, are what people come here for.

If you're in a hurry, call your order in ahead of arriving. Most people do. If you don't and you catch them at a bad time, you'll be waiting for a while.

Food wise, the burgers are top notch and would go toe to toe with just about any other burger (except the next two we'll be talking about). The green chile on the burgers here is clearly one of the most flavorful around!

The restaurant itself is a casual little cafe typle place. Nothing fancy at all. You order at the counter, get your name on the list, and wait until your food is ready.

The Double Great Burger with delicious green chile is another great option on the menu. The chile is a little on the hot side and has mucho flavor. Good stuff.
