IT IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
13 THINGS YOU MUST KNOW
LEARN THE FACTS FROM FICTION
#1 FACT - DO NOT THINK ALL BREAST LUMPS ARE CANCEROUS - 80% ARE NOT!
FACT: Because catching breast cancer early is so beneficial, report any changes to your doctor immediately.
#2 FACT - WOMEN WITH LUMPY BREASTS (also known as fibrocystic breast changes)
DO NOT HAVE A HIGHER RISK OF DEVELOPING BREAST CANCER
#3 FACT - BE AWARE OF OTHER SIGNS THAT MAY INDICATE BREAST CANCER
BEFORE A LUMP CAN BE FOUND
Women should also be on the alert for other kinds of changes that may be signs of cancer. These include swelling; skin irritation or dimpling; breast or nipple pain; nipple retraction (turning inward); redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin; or a discharge. Underarm lymph nodes and swelling can occur before a tumor in the breast is large enough to be felt.
#4 FACT - THE STATEMENT THAT ALL WOMEN HAVE A 1-IN-8 CHANCE OF GETTING BREAST CANCER IS NOT COMPLETELY ACCURATE.
FACT: The reality is your risk increases as you get older. A woman's chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer is about 1 in 233 when she's in her 30s and only rises to 1 in 8 when she's reached 85.
#5 FACT - A FAMILY HISTORY OF BREAST CANCER INCREASES THE RISK OF A
WOMAN GETTING BREAST CANCER,
FACT: the family-history risks are these: If a first-degree relative (a parent, sibling, or child) has had or has breast cancer, your risk of developing the disease approximately doubles. Having two first-degree relatives with the disease increases your risk even more.
#6 FACT - BREAST CANCER HISTORY IN YOUR FATHER'S FAMILY IS JUST AS
IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTANDING A WOMEN'S RISK OF DEVELOPING BREAST CANCER AS HER MOTHER'S FAMILY HISTORY
#7 FACT - THERE ARE HUGE BENEFITS REAPED FROM REGULAR MAMMOGRAM
MAMMOGRAMS CAN DETECT LUMPS BEFORE THEY CAN BE FELT, AND THE EARLIER LUMPS ARE FOUND THE BETTER CHANCES ONE'S CHANCE OF SURVIVAL.
The American Cancer Society has said unequivocally:
"all studies show that following the screening mammogram guidelines is the most effective thing a woman can do to reduce her chances of dying of breast cancer."
For the most recent screening guidelines GO TO: http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/20/health/new-acs-breast-cancer-screening-guidelines/index.html
#8 FACT SADLY, BREAST CANCER IS NOT PREVENTABLE
Although it is possible to identify risk factors (such as family history and inherited gene mutations) and make lifestyle changes that can lower your risk (reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption, losing weight, getting regular exercise and screenings, and quitting smoking), roughly 70% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors, meaning that the disease occurs largely by chance and according to as-yet-unexplained factors.
Currently the best we can do is early diagnosis via patient self-examination, regular physician examinations, and strictly following the guidelines for screening mammography
#9 MYTH / NOT TRUE:
Annual mammograms expose you to so much radiation that they increase your risk of cancer.
Reality: the amount is so small that any associated risks are tiny when compared to the huge preventive benefits reaped from the test.
#10 MYTH / NOT TRUE:
Breast implants can raise your cancer risk.
Reality: Women with breast implants are at no greater risk of getting breast cancer
#11 MYTH / NOT TRUE:
Only women with a family history of breast cancer are at risk.
Reality: Roughly 70% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no identifiable risk factors for the disease.
#12 MYTH / NOT TRUE:
Small-breasted women have less chance of getting breast cancer.
Reality: There's no connection between the size of your breasts and your risk of getting breast cancer.
#13 MYTH / NOT TRUE:
Having an abortion raises your risk of getting breast cancer.

Our home town Las Cruces, New Mexico's was #10 on the list, published by:
The report states "The town became popular during the new millennium with retirees seeking good weather and a lower cost of living, and the city grew from 52 to 77 square miles between 1999 and 2009.
The famous White Sands Missile Range is just up the road, but what really sets the town apart is the $200 million spaceport that, unlike other spaceports on our list, is already built. The first flight is scheduled to depart sometime this year."
